Chris Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, which is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
The actor's potential return as Steve Rogers in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday remains a little unclear, though Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is expected to appear as Captain America, according to sources.
While Evans stepping back into the Captain America costume seems unlikely, a reprise of his iconic role as Steve Rogers is not entirely off the table.
Evans recently made headlines for his cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU’s highest-grossing R-rated film to date.
In the movie, he briefly revisited his role as Johnny Storm, a character from Fox/Marvel’s Fantastic Four films, which predated his time as Captain America. His last appearance as Steve Rogers was in Avengers: Endgame, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
The Russos, known for helming Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame—the second highest-grossing film of all time at $2.799 billion—are returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday.
Deadline previously reported that several original MCU characters are expected to return for the project.
Robert Downey Jr., a longtime MCU staple, is set to play the film’s main villain, Dr. Doom, adding a multiversal twist to the storyline.
Additionally, the new Fantastic Four cast, including Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, will join the ensemble.
While Evans has previously expressed hesitation about returning without a compelling reason, speculation around his involvement continues to circulate.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for release in May 2027.
