The fact that Taylor Swift mentioned Charlie Puth in her most recent album did not sit well with Swifties.
The Grammy winner, 34, cheekily teases her paramour about his love of vintage typewriters and his tendency to compare himself to great poets in the album's title tune, The Tortured Poets Department.
Swift includes an unpredicted name drop early on, singing, "You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate/ We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist."
Following Swift's album release, the song's lyrics sparked a variety of reactions on the internet, from appreciation to perplexity.
Puth has made no secret of his love for Swift over the years, and he frequently covers her songs live.
"This is why she's such a genius, man," he said while performing her early hit Teardrops on My Guitar in 2021. "These are the chord changes. It's wonderful. I think it's wonderful."
The singers also engaged in a sweet exchange on TikTok when Swift joined the platform the same year, after Puth's welcoming of his "fellow Sag."
"I've lurked your account for ages! Thanks for the welcome, piano prince," Swift responded, adding a crown emoji.
