Phil Foden fires Manchester City closer to Premier League top behind Arsenal
Phil Foden's spectacular hat-trick lifts Manchester City to a Commanding 4-1 win over Aston Villa in Premier League showdown
Manchester City triumphed over Aston Villa with a stunning 4-1 victory in an electrifying showdown at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Manchester City's star performer was Phil Foden who struck a brilliant hat-trick.
The reigning champions kicked off the match in style as Rodri capitalised on Jeremy Doku's cross to score a goal just 11 minutes into the game.
Despite Villa's missing key players like Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez, they managed to level the score with a swift move, when Jhon Duran netted a goal nine minutes later. It seemed then that the first half would end in a draw. However, Manchester City quickly regained the lead before halftime when Foden's free kick found the net after a defensive mishap.
Foden continued to shine in the second half as well. He extended Manchester City's lead with a clinical strike off the post, bringing his season tally to an impressive 20 goals across all competitions.
Phil Foden then sealed his hat-trick with a sensational long-range shot that soared into the top corner.
After the victory, Manchester City are just a point behind new Premier League leaders, Arsenal. City are also level on points with Liverpool, trailing only on goal difference. However, Liverpool could reclaim top spot with a win over Sheffield United. Meanwhile, Aston Villa sit in fourth, but Tottenham could overtake them if they win their next match.
Manchester City will face Crystal Palace in their next match as Aston Villa prepare to host Brentford. Both matches are scheduled for this Saturday.
