Wearing black armbands, lawyers on Tuesday boycotted courts to observe a black day against suspension of the judiciary, imposition of emergency and promulgation of a provisional constitutional order (PCO) on this date eight years ago, by former President Pervez Musharraf.
The Karachi Bar Association held a general body meeting to condemn the imposition of emergency. The meeting was attended by senior leadership of the association including its president Naeem Qureshi, secretary Manzoor Hameed Arain, office-bearers Naheed Afzal and Khalid Mumtaz.
The participants spoke of victimisation of both the legal and media fraternity after imposition of the emergency. They said it was in light of the sacrifices rendered by lawyers and judges that democracy was restored in the country. A resolution condemning the controversial legislation was passed while a resolve to resist such a move in future was also expressed.
