A tennis veteran who deserves Pride of Performance Award
KARACHI: A very strong candidate for Pride of Performance has been waiting for the award for a long time but successive governments have continued to ignore him.
Nasir Munir is a veteran tennis player who brought several medals to Pakistan. He represented Pakistan from 1974 to 2002 and deserves the highest civil award for his contribution.
He represented Pakistan in junior Wimbledon in 1974.He won silver medal in Asian Games held in Bangkok in 1978. Nasir was gold and silver medalist in the 32-Nations Games held in Turkey in 1980.
He was member of Pakistan’s Davis Cup team in 1979 and for Asian Championship in Thailand in 1981.Nasir was part of the national Davis Cup team that reached the Eastern Zone Final in 1984. He was captain of Pakistan in Asian Championship in Beijing in 1989.
He captained Pakistan at Asian Games held in Beijing in 1990. He was also captain of Pakistan’s Davis Cup team in 1990 and in 1996. Nasir was the captain of Pakistan in Asian Games held in Bangkok in 1998.
He was a competitor in the 75th Anniversary of ITC Great Britain Wimbledon in 1999. He was winner of men’s doubles in 35 category and finalist in men’s doubles in 45 category in ITF Championships held in Karachi in 2000.
Nasir won the men’s doubles title in 45 category in ITF Championships held in England in 2001. He was a finalist in men’s singles 45 category in ITF Championships held in England in 2001.
He was a semi-finalist in Asian 45’s Vets Championships held in Thailand in 2002. He was national senior champion in 2004.Nasir also served as advisor to Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) from 1997 to 2002. He was the selector of the national team from 2002 to 2006.
