This past Sunday (March 23), we celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Lahore Resolution, which gave a practical shape to the long political struggle of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the ‘Pakistan Movement’. This struggle was not only against the British rulers but also against trading the British for another set of repressive rulers closer to home. In the spirit of the resolution, Pakistan came into being on August 14, 1947. Sadly, the Quaid passed away just a year after Independence and PM Liaquat Ali Khan was martyred a few years later.
Those left could not manage national political affairs wisely, bringing about decades-long instability which has continued to the present day. Pakistan has been spoiled by us to the extent that if our founders were to look at what has become of the country they dreamed of and worked so hard to build, they would be horrified. We have to move forward and learn from our past mistakes, to eliminate corruption at every level and to implement the law of the land without fear or favour.
