Famed Indian director Karan Johas became subjected to immense trolling by netizens after he allegedly made fun of the culture and traditional headgears of the people of northeast India.

Karan uploaded a video on Instagram which he shot during the talent show ‘India’s Got Talent’ which he judges alongside actress/politician Kirron Kher and actress Malaika Arora.

The video shows Kirron wearing a spiked bamboo Arunachalee hat and Karan saying, “oh my god, what is that on your head?"

To which, Kirron replied, “People from Arunachal Pradesh have brought it for me and they have got this for you," showing him an Assamese 'Japi', traditional hat made of bamboo, dried leaves and pieces of coloured cloths.

Kirron then asked Karan as to why he’s not wearing his hat. To which the filmmaker replied, “Because you have guts, I don’t.”

He added, “You are looking like you are going to break into some kind of qawwali.”

The BJP MP quips back, "How can I break into a qawwali in a bamboo hat. What's wrong with you? You don't know the states of this country."

One of the netizens commenting on Karan’s derogatory video said, “Our Prime Minister, President wear this Japi proudly when they visit northeast and they are leaving no stones unturned for the development of Northeast. At that time there are people like you who actually don't know about NorthEast and are actually insulting our culture.

Another Instagram user said, “Japi is the pride of Assam.”

After the backlash, the video has been taken down from Karan’s account.
