Ryan Reynolds becomes a Pokemon in Detective Pikachu's first look

Detective Pikachu is set in the Tokyo streets of Ryme City, a metropolis seemingly designed just for the franchise. It follows a failed Pokémon trainer named Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), who's mysteriously gifted with the power to understand Pikachu. As the trailer makes clear, they'll be teaming up to find out what happened to Tim's missing dad. Along the way, they fight and interrogate other Pokémon that all look like furry versions of the ones from the anime.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer of Detective Pikachu on Monday and it’s a mixture of live-action between human actors and computer-generated monsters.

The trailer is kind of cute and weird at the same time.

"I think we all knew I'd wind up as a miniature detective repeatedly saying the same two words. Just didn't think it'd be this soon," Ryan Reynolds tweeted while sharing the trailer. He's referring to this enigma that most people can only hear Pikachu saying "pika pika" when he tries to speak.

Fan-favorite starters like Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander make appearances and Mr. Mime and Psyduck get something of starring roles, but there are a few of the more obscure Pokemon scattered around in the backgrounds of plenty of shots, as well.

Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10, 2019.
