LONDON: The 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer suffered a shock defeat to Kei Nishikori at the ATP Finals on Sunday.
Federer was beaten 6-7 (4-7) 3-6 in his opening match of this year’s season-ending tournament at the O2, severely denting his bid for the 100th title of his illustrious career.
The Swiss, who has won the season-ending event a record six times, produced an uncharacteristically error-prone display at the O2 Arena in London.
The defeat to Japan’s Nishikori represented Federer’s fifth consecutive loss to a fellow top-10 player.
