Most Americans blame US President Donald Trump’s policies for persistently high prices as his approval on the economy falls to a new low, according to an AP-NORC poll.

The survey found 65 percent of US adults believe Trump’s policies are more responsible for higher-than-usual prices than factors outside his control.

Only 17 percent approve of his handling of the cost of living, while 26 percent approve of his handling of the economy overall.

About seven in 10 Americans said Trump’s handling of living costs has been worse than expected, including roughly half of Republicans.

About half of Americans said they were “extremely” or “very” concerned about being able to afford petrol, while a similar share expressed serious concerns about food costs, according to the Associated Press.

Sixty-four per cent said his new tariffs have “gone too far”, while 69 percent said the war with Iran has not been worth fighting.

The findings come weeks before November’s midterm elections, as Trump increases his campaign appearances in support of Republican candidates.
