London–Scotland rail services to be nationalized in March: UK Government

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander officially confirmed that the UK government is bringing Avanti West Coast rail services—connecting London to major Scottish hubs like Glasgow and Edinburgh—into public ownership.

Public takeover of the crucial West Coast Main Line (WCML) corridor is officially set for March, ending years of private operation by FirstGroup and Trenitalia.

In announcing the move, Alexander slammed the private operator's performance, pointing to persistent delays, cancellations, and chronic disruption that have plagued commuters.

Under state control, management fees previously paid to private shareholders will instead be funneled directly back into the network to fund service upgrades, infrastructure alignment, and reliability measures.

Avanti West Coast runs key routes through northern England and into Scotland, including services between Glasgow and Edinburgh and London Euston. It also runs a service between London and Wales, to Holyhead.

In a post on social media, Prime Minister Andy Burnham echoed Alexander's comments.

"For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti's cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service that has failed them time and time again," he said.

Transport officials confirm the crucial West Coast Main Line will return to public hands this March following years of poor performance and chronic cancellations.

The nationalisation marks another major milestone in the government's wider strategy to systematically bring Britain's fragmented passenger rail network back under public control.

The move is part of a government plan to improve rail infrastructure, cut train delays and improve experiences for passengers.
