Trump import ban hits Canadian alcohol, dairy and motorcycles this week

New US import bans on several Canadian products are set to take effect Tuesday as trade tensions between Canada and the United States continue.

The restrictions begin at 12:01 AM and cover select Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles, according to the White House.

Alcohol products on the list include whisky, wine, beer, vermouth, vodka and rum. Canada exported $1.36 billion in alcoholic beverages in 2023, with 90 percent going to the US, according to Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service.

The dairy restrictions focus largely on whey, including whey protein and other products.

Statistics Canada reported more than $700 million in dairy exports to the US in 2024, although it is unclear how much will be affected.

Motorcycles and mopeds with certain internal combustion engines over 800cc are also included.

President Donald Trump announced the bans on September 8 in response to Canadian counter-tariffs introduced after the US imposed 50 perncet tariffs on numerous Canadian goods.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC that Trump was “comfortable” with the current state of trade negotiations.

Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told Global News that Canada “maintains ongoing communications with our American counterparts.”
