US, China agree on AI ‘communication channel’ after Trump-Xi summit

China and the United States have agreed to establish a "bilateral communication channel” for AI incidents.

The announcement comes from the White House after the Trump-XI summit that occurred on Thursday. Although the experts were critical of this summit as it failed to achieve breakthroughs ranging from trade, and artificial intelligence to geopolitical conflicts.

According to the White House documents, “The countries have established a US-China dialogue on superintelligence to exchange views on the risks and benefits associated with superintelligence.”

“The next exchange will take place no later than November 2026. The United States and China have also agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving superintelligence," the documents said.

The two leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence” to describe the applicable emerging technologies.

Prior to the summit, Trump posted, “A big day with ​President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) ​will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it ​exactly where it is. That is China’s position also.”

During the high-stakes summit, artificial intelligence was high on agenda as researchers repeatedly warned that unchecked development of artificial intelligence poses existential risks to humanity. Even the top executives of tech industry including OpenAI Sam Altman, Anthropic Dario Amodei and Elon Musk voiced concerns and vouched for slowing down AI models development.

However, President Trump downplayed these fears and calls and called them a hoax and sick conspiracy that is directed at stifling American technological innovation at the expense of AI supremacy. On the other hand, Chinese officials also slammed these warnings as a tool of fearmongering.
