Ed Sheeran's apology 'divides' internet and Philadelphia concertgoers
Ed Sheeran has to state backlash over Macklemore's firing
Ed Sheeran has finally broken his silence over the controversy that engulfed his Loop tour after his opening act performer, rapper Macklemore, was fired for expressing his political views on stage.
In a 4-minute speech, which the Shape of You singer read from the teleprompter, he acknowledged the possibility of him making mistakes.
He even broke down in tears during the speech as he shared his concerns that the controversy put him in a spot that he feared for the continuation of his tour.
“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry,” he added.
The British singer continued, “I really didn’t know if this tour would be carrying on."
"I really didn’t know whether I’d even be getting on stage again, whether I even wanted to be an artist at all. In these situations, you really find out who your friends are.”
Now, Variety noted a sharp contrast between reactions online and those at the stadium.
While on the internet, some social media users slammed Sheeran for using 'neutral language' and doing 'both-sideism' to the complicated conflict in the Middle East.
But on the other hand, Kim Shafer, who attended the concert in Philadelphia, told Variety, "It brought a tear to my eye—I think it was very heartfelt."
“And I think he made his position, where he stands, very clear," she said.
Sheeran's apology comes after Macklemore's firing over expressing his political views sparked outrage.
