Trump claims US gains ‘permanent control’ over Greenland security in new Arctic deal

The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an Arctic security agreement after President Donald Trump repeatedly pushed for US control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Trump announced the agreement Friday, describing it as “very important, historic, and special” in a post on Truth Social.

Denmark and Greenland said the pact is expected to be signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week but the full terms were not immediately released.

Trump claimed the agreement “gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns”.

He also said the US would begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland, while Washington already operates the Pituffik Space Base and has existing defence rights on the island.

However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that the agreement “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination”.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the pact “ensures and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western Alliance”.

Trump has previously argued that US control of Greenland is necessary for national and economic security, while Denmark has repeatedly said the territory is not for sale.

According to Danish and Greenlandic officials , the agreement will require parliamentary procedures before it can take effect.
