Trump sparks backlash after calling a unified Ireland 'Fantastic' during visit

During a visit to Ireland centered around a trip to his Doonbeg golf resort, U.S. President Donald Trump drew immediate international attention by declaring that a unified Ireland would be "fantastic".

Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump remarked that he would love to see Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland come together, adding his belief that the unification is bound to happen eventually and "may as well happen now".

The unexpected intervention quickly broke from the traditional neutrality maintained by previous American administrations regarding Northern Ireland’s constitutional future.

While nationalist leaders and figures pushing for a border poll welcomed the remarks, the comments provoked a sharp and immediate backlash from British politicians and Northern Ireland unionists.

Representatives for UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reiterated that a referendum remains firmly off the table without clear, majority public support, emphasizing that the status of the region must be decided strictly by its own people under the framework of the Good Friday Agreement.

Beyond the political fallout in Westminster and Belfast, Trump's itinerary also featured high-level diplomatic friction in Dublin.

He held a closed-door meeting with Irish President Catherine Connolly, a left-wing politician who previously criticized his policies and faced widespread protests from demonstrators gathered in the capital.

Following his engagements in Dublin, Trump traveled onward to his oceanfront resort in County Clare to attend the final stages of the Irish Open.
