Trump heads to Ireland for two-day visit: What’s on agenda

President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Ireland on Saturday where he will hold talks with Ireland leaders before attending a golf tournament this week.

The US President is set for separate meetings in Dublin with Irish President Catherine Connolly and PM Micheal Martin. Besides that, Trump will also meet US and Irish business leaders at the US ambassador’s official residence in Dublin.

Afterwards, he will head towards the golf club in Doonbeg to watch the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament, wrapping up on Sunday. Trump is expected to help present the trophy on Sunday to the ​tournament champion.

What to expect

According to Irish PM Martin, the relationship between Ireland and the United States is very significant economically.

Around 10 percent of workers in Ireland work in US-owned companies after successive governments prioritized their jobs and corporate tax revenue over decades, giving Ireland an edge in public Finances in Europe.

Ahead of Trump's visit to Ireland, Martin also issued a statement, “I look forward to welcoming President Trump to Ireland and to discussing the many issues of mutual interest and reaffirming the strong economic, cultural and people-to-people ties between Ireland and the United States.”

"His visit comes during a remarkable sporting summer for Ireland, and the United States and this weekend's Irish Open at Trump International Doonbeg will be a fitting conclusion to an outstanding season of sport, and I hope we will see an Irish winner lifting the trophy on Sunday."

However, Trump’s visit to Ireland is expected to draw anti-war and anti-Iran protests from people. Ireland is one of the most pro-Palestinian countries in the European Union and has been criticised for its stance by Israel.

Trump first visited the Republic in 2019 when Connolly, an outspoken politician with far-left views on foreign policy, protested against his visit outside Shannon Airport in western Ireland.
