Carney cabinet meets behind closed doors as Trump targets more Canadian imports

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is gathering his cabinet in Banff, Alberta, for two days of closed-door meetings as US President Donald Trump intensifies his trade war with Canada.

The cabinet retreat begins Thursday and comes as the Liberal government prepares its agenda for the fall sitting of Parliament, which is set to begin in less than two weeks.

The meetings follow another escalation in trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

Trump signed executive orders Tuesday that will ban certain Canadian imports later this month, including alcohol, motorcycles and dairy products.

The move comes after Ottawa imposed tens of billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs on US goods as the two countries continue their escalating trade dispute.

Carney and his ministers are expected to use the Banff retreat to discuss the government’s priorities ahead of Parliament’s return.

The Prime Minister’s Office said cabinet ministers will also hear from guest speakers during closed-door sessions focused on the economy, Indigenous partnerships and international affairs.

The retreat comes as Carney’s government faces growing pressure to respond to Trump’s latest trade measures.
