Ex-Tory campaign chief pleads guilty in election betting scandal: What to know

The Conservatives’ former director of campaigning and his wife have pledged guilty to cheating at gambling by placing bets on the timing of the 2024 UK general election. The case is reportedly part of a broader investigation into election-related bets involving political figures.

According to current details, Anthony Lee leaked secret data to his wife Laura Lee regarding when then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak planned to call the general election.

Laura Lee who was a parliamentary candidate placed bets on the due date of the general election. On Thursday, Anthony Lee admitted guilt to two counts with sentencing scheduled in October. Former MP Craif Williams who was also Sunak’s special adviser at that time also submitted a guilty plea in June and will be sentenced at a later date.

In Williams' case, the prosecution said he bet £250, £100, and £22.50 on the 2024 election date, suggesting that he handled sensitive data improperly, carelessly, and in breach of protocol.

They were all charged after an investigation into allegations was found inside the information on the date of the 2024 general election.

Hind, Lee, and Sander are all now due to be sentenced at the same court on October 23; however Williams will be sentenced following trials in September 2027 and September 2028 involving other party officials and insiders who are also accused of cheating at gambling.
