Argentina targets 45 entities with sanctions over Falkland islands oil projects

Latest update reveals, Argentina has escalated tensions over the disputed archipelago by launching formal sanction proceedings against 45 entities and individuals linked to hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation around the Falkland Islands (known in Argentina as Islas Malvinas).

The crackdown primarily focuses on offshore projects like the major Sea Lion oilfield—a multi-billion-barrel project being developed by British firm Rockhopper Exploration and Israel-based Navitas Petroleum.

Argentina has announced that it will investigate and sanction oil companies working near the Falkland Islands without authorization, after President Javier Milei said the "winds of change" favor his country's claim to the archipelago.

As reported by AFP, Argentine President labeled the project a "clear and present danger" to national sovereignty.

Buenos Aires announced that the legal actions target not just the primary energy companies, but also their shareholders and the third-party service providers facilitating the operations.

The aggressive stance follows comments from U.S. President Donald Trump indicating that Washington might review its historic position on the islands.

Capitalizing on what he called "winds of change," Milei also announced plans to fund a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego to bolster Argentina's southern military presence.

London firmly dismissed the threats as domestic political posturing. British officials—including Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Defense Secretary Wes Streeting—reiterated that the UK's commitment to the islands is "unshakeable" and that the islanders' right to self-determination and to develop their own natural resources remains paramount.

Meanwhile, energy firms involved have downplayed the immediate impact on their operational timelines.
