Trump confirms Witkoff, Kushner mission to Russia, Ukraine with ‘idea for peace’
Russia-Ukraine conflict has been ongoing for four and half years
Russia and Ukraine peace mission is somehow turning into reality as the US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit Moscow and Kyiv on Saturday and Sunday.
The confirmation of the highly anticipated visit also comes from President Donald Trump.
Speaking to the reporters on Friday, Trump confirmed the report of Witkoff and Kushner’s visit to Russia and Ukraine with the motive of forging a peace deal between two warring parties.
Trump also suggested that the US had “a fresh concrete proposal” aimed at ending the war, ongoing for four and half years. However, he did not disclose the details of the proposal.
It is also not confirmed whether Kushner and Witkoff would be traveling to Ukraine, Russia or both nations.
"We have an idea for peace," Trump said.
"I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, two great negotiators. They've done a great job, and we sent them over to see whether or not we can get something done. And there may be a good chance that we'll do it."
The pair had intended to spend the weekend visiting Moscow before heading to Kyiv, according to two Reuters sources. However, one source noted on Friday that the travel plans have fluctuated recently, leaving the Kyiv leg unconfirmed.
However, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday the US negotiators would visit Ukraine on Sunday after visiting Moscow.
Russia’s response
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered on Friday when asked about the report, "I wouldn't make any announcements right now, but we will inform you when these contacts take place.”
According to Peskov, Russian position over the demand of Ukraine ceding the entire territory of four regions claimed by Moscow and rescinding its plan to join NATO is unshakeable.
Peskov said the possibility of eventually reaching a ”peace settlement could not be ruled out, but the necessary basis for this did not exist right now.”
"The work continues, and the contacts continue," he said.
