Leanne Morgan opens up about avoiding stereotypes in her namesake series
Leanne Morgan gushes over her namesake series for simply being 'wonderful' in her Netflix series
Leanne Morgan recently got candid and opened up about how her writers captured her Southern voice for her namesake series.
For those unaware, Leanne is an American television sitcom created by Morgan, Chuck Lorre, and Susan McMartin that premiered on Netflix on July 31, 2025. The series also stars Chuck Lorre, Celia Weston, Blake Clark, Ryan Stiles, Kristen Johnson, and others.
The 60-year-old Comedian and actress appeared on The Women of Joy Show, where she reflected on experiencing extreme cultural differences as they relocated to Los Angeles from Tennessee.
Voicing her thoughts, she admitted to being stressed about the negative portrayal of “the South and church people.”
Morgan said, “I have got a wonderful writing staff, and they have got my voice. But at first, I was like, ‘They’re stereotyping the South, they’re stereotyping Christians.'”
“So, at first, I thought, ‘Are they gonna get this right?’ Cause people stereotype the South and church people and all of that, so that was very important to me. And I realized I had to give them grace, because a lot of my writers were not raised in church, and I think they’ve done a really good job,” the You're Cordially Invited star gushed.
In the script, she rewrites things considering what people say in the South, as she explained, “We use Dukes Mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip. Even something simple like that.”
“But they’re very wonderful to me, because it is based on my comedy and all of that. I can do whatever I want to, I’m an executive producer, and they’re very good to me about that,” Morgan confessed.
It is pertinent to mention that the sophomore season of Leanne is scheduled to be released on Netflix on August 27, 2026. Watch the trailer here.
