‘National Treasure 3’ in the works, franchise director reveals
‘National Treasure’ last installment was released in 2007
In the National Treasure movies, the treasure hunt is at the heart of it all. Now, time to go on to another question.
This is because, as director Jon Turtletaub confirmed, a third installment is in the works.
And the filmmaker chose just the perfect platform to drop the bombshell announcement.
During a live taping of the National Treasure Hunt podcast, he said, “I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop," before telling the audience they were the first people to hear about this.
Turtletaub then said, “National Treasure 3 is happening."
However, he pointed out the unpredictability of Hollywood, “It’s finally real. Now, it’s ‘Hollywood real,’ meaning things could happen.”
But the question appears: Will Nicolas Cage — the force of the previous two movies — be in the upcoming one?
Turtletaub said potentially yes, quipping, 'Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no ‘National Treasure 3.’ If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a ‘National Treasure 3.’ Welcome to Hollywood.”
Not to mention, the director said a script is in the works, adding that “to whatever extent we can, everyone’s back.”
Turtletaub's announcement could pave the path for a reunion of the franchise that was launched in 2004, though it recently released a spin-off series, National Treasure: Edge of History.
