Tropical Storm Cristobal forms in Atlantic as more storms develop

Tropical Storm Cristobal has formed in the Atlantic Ocean as forecasters monitor at least two other systems for possible development during the 2026 hurricane season.

Cristobal developed from an area of disturbed weather about 1,050 miles east-northeast of Bermuda, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.

The storm formed unexpectedly ahead of another system farther south that forecasters had been closely monitoring.

Cristobal, the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, is producing tropical storm-force winds southeast of its centre, according to satellite data.

The NHC expects the storm to be relatively short-lived because of its location.

Cristobal is forecast to move east to east-northeast at about 20mph across the central subtropical Atlantic.

Forecasters are also tracking disturbed weather about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

That system is moving west towards the Caribbean and is expected to develop into a tropical depression within 48 hours.

If it strengthens into a tropical storm, the next on the Atlantic list is Dolly.

Meanwhile, forecasters are monitoring another system in the Central Pacific, about 1,000 miles east-southeast of Hawaii.

The NHC has designated it Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C and is expected to issue advisories as it develops.
