'Game of Thrones' prequel play stuns audiences and earns standing ovation despite bumpy start

The Mad King, a stage play of Game of Thrones, was delayed for a long time. Yet, when it was performed in its preview, the response couldn't have been less electric.

Under the HBO and Royal Shakespeare Company co-production, director Dominic Cooke flags a warning to the audience that a few technical issues are still due to the stage play being in preview, so the show could pause.

Shockingly, he also revealed that he will be watching the play for the first time in its entirety because the cast had not run the entire show on stage, according to The Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald.

Despite the fears, the fantasy epic, just shy of four hours, unfolded without any technical hiccup, and the RSC company, behind the play, said it had received "incredible" feedback.

The rousing response comes after producers had to axe the first week of previews, set to begin on July 20 at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The decision was defended on the grounds of “the additional time necessary to progress and refine the work in real time.”

However, the cancellation at the eleventh hour frustrated the theatergoers.

To address their anger, the RSC has added some extra performances of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones: The Mad King, set to show events before the hit HBO series, and will open on Aug. 8.
