Imax boss reacts as Christopher Nolan epic 'The Odyssey' shatters box-office records

Christopher Nolan is a strong advocate of Imax format. By convincing and reportedly nudging, he was granted to shoot The Odyssey wholly on the special cameras for the first time ever for a film.

And the bet paid off.

According to Imax, the company recorded 12% revenue up from last year, posting $102.8 million in second-quarter revenue.

In addition, the giant-screen exhibitor also registered its best second-quarter worldwide box office in seven years.

All thanks to Nolan and his Greek epic, which is still dominating strong ticket demand, forcing theatres to add more showtimes.

Imax head Rich Gelfond, in a statement, raved about the film, saying, “The Odyssey has the potential to impact our business in many ways that are clear — and many ways we can’t yet predict, as its success on our platform reverberates across the creative community, and throughout the entertainment landscape."

Moving away from The Odyssey, the company's head points to another hit upcoming film - shot with Imax cameras - to carry the momentum built from Nolan's movie forward.

“In the near-term, the film gives us excellent momentum as we enter the second half of the year, with a strong slate that culminates with ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which was also shot with Imax film cameras and will be presented in Imax 70mm film," Gelfond concluded.
