Historic Air Force One jets near end of service after 35 years in the skies

White House officials have bid farewell to the iconic Boeing 747-200 aircraft that has served as Air Force One since 1990, as a new generation of presidential planes prepares to enter service.

After returning to Washington on Thursday, White House communications director Steve Cheung posted a photograph of the aircraft on X, writing: "The last ride." He added: "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino also paid tribute, saying he had "been fortunate to fly around the world on this iconic plane for 5 1/2 years — of the 35 years it has been serving US presidents… THANK YOU…"

According to CNN, three Boeing 747-800 aircraft are being modified to replace the ageing VC-25A fleet.

One of them is a luxury jet donated by Qatar, which is being retrofitted while Boeing completes two additional aircraft expected in roughly two years.

The US Air Force said the existing VC-25A aircraft will remain in service alongside the new planes for the time being.

The historic jets have carried presidents around the world and played key roles during major events, including the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

CNN reported that the replacement aircraft will feature a red, white, gold and dark blue colour scheme favoured by President Donald Trump.
