Brazilian woman accused of posing as a child in years-long fraud scheme
The case has widely publicized in local media, sparking disbelief that she managed to sustain the deception for so long
A serious incident took place in Brazil when a 38-year-old woman was arrested, accused of acting as a 12-year-old girl to trick a couple who took her into their home for more than a year, according to details revealed by the police.
Meanwhile, Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira was charged in the southern state of Santa Catarina involved in fraudulent impersonation. Oliveira was reportedly arrested following a pattern of similar deceptions across multiple Brazilian states dating back to the late 2000s.
The public prosecutors said that the current investigation uncovered fraud schemes involving fraudulent creations and the psychological abuse of victims to attain undue advantages.
The couple provide further details to police that Oliveira first approached them at an evangelical church, and introduced herself as “Gabriell”, asserting to be18 years old.
Later on she changed her story, admitting that she was in fact 11 years older because her father had forced her to take hormones and abused her.
The deception finally deciphered when a visiting aunt grew suspicious of her age, searched online, and she discovered reports of Oliveira pulling the exact same scam on another family in Rio de Janeiro three years earlier.
It has been observed that videos and photographs shared by other victims also show Oliveira using baby bottles and speaking innocently like a child.
Oliveira’s lawyer said: “ He had identified elements that justified requesting a psychiatric evaluation.”
The judge has reportedly granted a defense motion, and the current proceedings have been suspended until she is mentally stable to stand trial.
