Trump administration considers new $250 bill featuring president’s portrait

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Thursday that the department is preparing to print $250 bills featuring President Donald Trump’s face, pending a green light from Congress.

According to Bessent there is a legislative proposal on Capitol Hill “to change the first requirement so that a living person, Trump could be on a $250 bill.”

At the Treasury we prepare things in advance, so we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law,” Bessent said while leading Thursday’s White House press briefing.

Bessent made a comparison on adding Trump’s face to the currency to the forthcoming celebrations for the country’s 250th anniversary. He further argued that the issue is bifurcated from the economic hardships as Americans strive to buy gas and groceries. 

Notably, the legislation must be approved by both the House and Senate before it can be signed into law by Trump.

Trump-appointed members validated a design featuring Trump’s image on 24-karat commemorative gold coins in honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary. Trump and his allies have gone through a series of initiatives by the administration to leave Trump’s lasting impression on the federal government.

Trump has attached his name to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, while also extending its branding to drug programs, savings accounts and a proposed class of warships.

Florida recently passed a legislature to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Trump. Additionally, the banners featuring the president’s face have been displaced banners outside the Justice Department and the Department of Labor.
