Minneapolis: ICE officer fires bullet after migrant attacks with a shovel
The incident happened during a targeted operation in Minneapolis
A dramatic immigration enforcement operation in north Minneapolis turned into a violent confrontation on Wednesday evening when an ICE officer shot a man after being attacked, officials said.
According to US authorities, the incident happened during a targeted operation. The Department of Homeland Security said officers were attempting to arrest a man believed to be a Venezuelan migrant in the United States illegally, reports CBS News.
The man fled from a traffic stop, crashed into a parked car and ran on foot. He reportedly resisted arrest and assaulted an ICE officer.
Security officials said two other people emerged from an apartment and also attacked the officer with a snow shovel and a broom handle, prompting the agent to fire back the man in the leg.
All three suspects then ran back into the residence and barricaded themselves inside before being taken into custody.
Both the ICE officer who was struck during the confrontation and the man shot in the leg were taken to hospital.
Authorities said the injuries were not believed to be life threatening and both were in stable condition.
This incident follows the controversial fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE agent in the city earlier this month, adding fuel to already heated debates about immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
