James Gunn's 'Superman' gets unexpected praise from top director
The praise relates to how James Gunn portrays 'Superman', which is the 'healing power of goodness'
Guillermo del Toro is known for making horror movies, so it comes as significant praise when he gushes about James Gunn's Superman.
Speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he says, "I really enjoy the way James Gunn is viewing the universe. When I saw Superman, you feel the healing power of goodness from someone that believes in it."
His praise is in line with what several critics also raved about how the Kryptonite's son goes through his self-discovery on earth.
Seeking goodness is a choice that the movie clearly shows, as seen in moments like Jonathan Kent, father of Clark Kent, telling him, "Your choices, Clark. Your actions, that's what makes you who you are."
Then, when Luther calls Superman an alien, his speech doubles down on what James wanted to depict the superhero in his version. "I am as human as anyone. I love, I get scared."
He continued, "I wake up every morning, and despite not knowing what to do, I put one foot in front of the other, and I try to make the best choices that I can. I screw up all the time, but that is being human, and that's my greatest strength."
The movie, released last July, scored 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed more than $616 million worldwide.
On the heels of the success, James previously revealed a follow-up to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, is in the works and will arrive in cinemas on July 9, 2027.
