Thousands of people in Australia were left without power on Sunday November 23,2025 after tropical cyclone Fina brought destructive winds to the Northern Territory of the region, including capital Darwin.
The cyclone has been considered as the worst since Tracy in 1974. Fina intensifies to category 4 as it moves towards northeast Kimberley coast.
Arriving as a category 3 system, overnight gusting winds of 195km/h and heavy torrential rains from cyclone Fina has caused major destruction on Saturday night and later intensifies as category 4 storm on Sunday after it moved to south-west towards Kimberley coast.
Residents were asked to stay in their households or emergency shelters as nearly 19,500 homes and businesses were left without power and phone and internet services got offline in the region.
A veteran witness of Territory cyclones, Kent Pedersen said the damage around his home was the worst since he lived through cyclone Tracy in 1974.
“It probably is the worst since Tracy, it’s certainly caused a bit of damage,” said Kent.
Parts of ceiling of Royal Darwin hospital also collapsed but the National Territory NT chief minister, Lia Finocchiaro confirmed in a press conference held on Sunday afternoon that no patients were hurt.
Furthermore, the PowerWater reported power outages across Darwin and coastal areas, and informed in a statement that its crew had started damage assessment and would work to restore power as soon as it is safe to do so.
