Storm Claudia chaos: Major incident declared after Monmouth floods overnight

Flooding in Monmouth has been declared a major incident by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service after severe and widespread flooding.

Storm Claudia has brought a wave of cold weather and torrential rain to the United Kingdom as more warnings are in place for major parts of England. Four severe flood warnings were issued at 6 a.m. by Natural Resources Wales.

The emergency services have been working tirelessly throughout the night, conducting rescues, evacuations and welfare checks to help those affected by the natural calamity.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid travelling to Monmouth, stating they need the routes to remain clear for emergency services to reach the affected.

The fire service area manager Matt Jones thanked the emergency personnel involved in rescue missions, adding, “The professionalism and care our personnel continue to show in these difficult times is commendable.”

Severe flooding has been recorded in Monmouth and the city council has urged residents to avoid travelling unless “absolutely necessary”.

A total of 194 flood alerts and 92 flood warnings have been issued across England.
