A highly publicized case recently concluded in the south-eastern US state of North Carolina, where a woman was ordered by a jury to pay $US1.7 million ($2.6 million) for sabotaging a couple’s marriage.

The lawsuit, filed in Durham County Court, North Carolina, accuses an influencer-Brenay Kennard- who has nearly 3 million followers on TikTok and 274,000 followers on Instagram-of having a relationship with her manager, Tim Montague.

Concerning the situation, the jury found Kennard accountable for marital infidelity.

North Carolina law allows a spouse to sue the person they blame for an affair that ends a marriage. This is a civil claim for when the person’s actions caused the breakdown of the marriage.

It is one of the few states that allows a betrayed spouse to sue someone for being involved in their marriage.

The lawsuit implies that Akira Montague, who brought the suit to civil court, married Tim Montague on October 20, 2018.

She was of the view that the affair disrupted her mental health, and ultimately caused severe damage to her health.

Kennard said, "She gave her consent, and said that it was OK because she knew her marriage was over and it was done."

The case depicts the pursuit of a heart balm action in North Carolina even when social media figures and modern relationships are being involved in such cases.
