Karla Sofía Gascón breaks silence on ditching Selena Gomez big day
Karla Sofia Gascón opens up about why she missed her Emilia Perez co-star Selena Gomez's wedding
Karla Sofía Gascón revealed why she was unable to attend Selena Gomez’s wedding to music producer Benny Blanco earlier this year.
The 53-year-old actress, who has been busy with work commitments, said that it was her schedule that made it impossible to be at the star-studded event.
Speaking at the Los40 Music Awards in Valencia, Spain, Gascón explained she often misses family weddings due to professional obligations.
“I’m working. Imagine, I don’t even go to my family’s. Because there’s a lot of money to spend. Imagine if I had to pay at Selena’s. No, no. I’d be ruined!” she said, laughing during the interview.
Gomez and Blanco exchanged their vows in late September near Santa Barbara, with Emilia Perez co-stars Zoe Saldana and Édgar Ramírez in attendance.
Gascón’s absence was so obvious that led fans to make assumptions, especially given her close connection to the cast.
The actress has faced controversy in recent years after old tweets resurfaced, leading to backlash over racist and anti-Islamic remarks.
However, these incidents are the biggest reason behind her decision to skip major award shows such as the BAFTAs, SAG and Goya Awards.
In one 2020 post, Gascón commented on the presence of Muslim women in Spain, and another tweet included a sarcastic remark about a Muslim family at a restaurant.
Despite the controversy and missing high-profile events like Gomez’s wedding, the star continued to focus on her career.
She remained active professionally, attending events and pursuing projects, showing that her work is a priority even amid public scrutiny.
Karla's explanation highlighted the challenges of balancing personal relationships, professional commitments and public life in Hollywood.
