Can Brazil’s bold strategy for Cop30 work to deliver results?

Brazil’s unorthodox approach to CoP30,hosted in Belem at the gateway to the Amazon rainforest, is moving towards a major shift, setting new goals for the 50,000 plus people descending on the Amazon, and accelerating concrete implementation plans and action.

Belem, a small city located at the mouth of the Amazon river, has been specifically criticized for the outrageous cost of scarce hotel rooms and deserted vacated apartments.

Meanwhile, Cop30 will bear the concerning country’s influence to a far greater extent than most of the annual conference of the Parties meeting held since the conference began in 1922.

Brazil has put a lot of preparation into this Cop over two years aiming to play bigger for communities and to ensure fairness and equity, which are key considerations in any climate policy.

It is strongly endorsing an action agenda for Cop30, and its thematic days will be organized along six key axes, including energy transition, low-carbon transport, conserving forests, oceans, and biodiversity.

This resulted in transforming the entire agriculture and food systems, fostering adaptability, and subsequently mobilizing necessary resources, including finance, technology, and capacity-building.

Brazil's all-encompassing tenet for Cop30 is all about execution and taking measures to achieve existing goals rather than setting new ones; its pivotal role is to create a strategic plan for the next decade.

In this connection, the executive secretary of the UNFCCC is discussing potential reforms for the Cops. “We must also keep evolving, and striving towards faster, fully inclusive, higher-quality decisions that tie the formal process ever-closer to real economies and real lives.”

Nonetheless, Cop30 demonstrated a crucial shift in focus, and its entire success can be measured by its ability to deliver more action-oriented real outcomes to traditional results.
