Ben Stiller reflects on challenges of doing ‘comedy’ these days
Ben Stiller on ‘taking chances with comedy’, ‘more challenging’
Ben Stiller believes comedy should never stop challenging the status quo, even in a time when speaking freely has become more complicated.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, the Severance director and longtime comedian said that humour is facing new obstacles in today’s political and cultural environment.
“We live in a world where taking chances with comedy is more challenging,” Stiller said.
“You’re seeing that front and center in our country. But I think it’s important that comedians keep doing what they’re doing, speaking truth to power and being free to say what they want. That’s the most important thing.”
His comments come as the entertainment industry continues to debate the boundaries of free speech in comedy.
The topic gained fresh attention after ABC temporarily pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air on September 17, following host Jimmy Kimmel’s on-air remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The show returned to its regular schedule on September 22.
Stiller also pointed to social media as another major challenge to modern comedy, expressing concern that the fast-paced nature of platforms like TikTok and Instagram has made it harder for audiences to stay engaged.
“You have things that go out to huge audiences very quickly,” he said. “I think we’ve reduced our attention spans down a little bit. I feel lucky to have grown up in the analogue world.”
As one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedic voices, Stiller has seen how humour has evolved over the decades.
The actor, known for iconic hits like Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Anchorman, and Tropic Thunder, has built a career on sharp wit and bold creative choices.
Now, he’s urging today’s comedians to keep doing the same — even when the world makes it harder to laugh.
