AI-powered cameras aid doctor to perform solo surgery in Chile: Watch
The recent breakthrough will take the surgery one step closer to automation
In the healthcare sector, artificial intelligence (AI) has made another significant breakthrough as AI-powered cameras help a doctor to perform solo surgery in Chile.
Ricardo Funke, the chief of surgery at Clinica Las Condes in Santiago has successfully carried out a laparoscopic surgery to remove gallbladder alone by using the autonomous AI-guided camera.
The procedure consists of magnetic surgical instruments equipped with software that aids in tracking the surgeon’s tool, autonomously directing the surgical camera, and making the adjustment in different angles without possible human help.
As reported by the Reuters, Dr. Funke said, “The camera was following me wherever I moved my hands and the whole surgical process was remarkable.”
He further commented on the possibility of potential automation in surgical procedures, “This camera let us do the surgery alone, I did it alone with the robot.”
Various efforts have taken place at academic and commercial levels to develop AI-powered tools to perform the surgery.
According to Precedence Research, the surgical robot market is expected to grow to $64.5 billion by 2034 due to rapid advancements in the field of AI.
The researchers at Johns Hopkins in the USA have developed an AI-assisted robot capable of performing complicated surgery on pig gallbladders and liver.
The scientists hailed this breakthrough as a significant step that will not only speed up medical procedures but also revolutionize the healthcare sector.
