Lorde makes shocking confession about eating disorder battle
Lorde bares her pain and reveals how she turned struggles into strength
Lorde reflected on her music and personal struggles, sharing how she views pop as something meant for everyone rather than just herself.
The 28 year old singer explained that she wanted her songs to bring comfort to fans who are dealing with pain and challenges.
In an interview with Dazed, she revealed how rereading Lois Lowry’s The Giver made her think about her role as an artist.
She explained: “There’s this figure in the community who feels all the pain that other people couldn’t handle – absorbs it, holds it.
Without being too f****** high-minded – I make pop music, I’m under no illusion – I think it’s my job to get as close to these big, deep pains that we all feel as I can bear, and try and alchemise them into something that is beautiful and gives catharsis.”
Although her songs often come from personal experiences, she stressed that they are not only about her.
Lorde said she believed pop music stood out because “it’s about the collective.”
The singer, however, looked back on her struggles at the start of 2023, when she admitted she felt completely cut off from her creativity.
The icon shared that an eating disorder consumed her life and pushed music aside. “All I was thinking about was trying to weigh as little as possible. Going to sleep thinking about food, waking up thinking about food and exercise – that was my creative pursuit."
Despite the challenges, Lorde released her latest album Virgin this year, calling it a brave and honest project where she put her artistry first.
