Sydney Sweeney shuts down jeans controversy talk at TIFF
Sydney Sweeney breaks silence after American Eagle 'jeans' controversy
Sydney Sweeney recently shut down discussion about her American Eagle campaign controversy at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The 27-year-old actress, known for her versatile performances, refused to engage in questions about jeans campaign.
On Thursday, September 4, the Euphoria star spoke exclusively with Vanity Fair about her upcoming boxing film Christy.
Speaking to the outlet, she said, “I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
This came after Sweeney sparked controversy with her American Eagle ad campaign, Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.
The promotional video featured her playing on the words “jeans” and “genes,” saying, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.”
Earlier in July, the campaign divided the internet, with some criticising the wordplay as unnecessary.
However, American Eagle later clarified its intention, stating the campaign “is and always was about the jeans” and that “great jeans look good on everyone.”
Meanwhile, the Anyone But You actress has reportedly gained more than 30 lbs for her much-anticipated film Christy, a biopic based on the real-life boxer Christy Martin.
For the unversed, the film is set to have its world premiere on Friday, September 5, at the Toronto International Film Festival.
