Royal couple battles racism and exile in new Netflix doc: Watch trailer
Netflix is releasing a new royal documentary following the success of 2022's 'Harry & Meghan'
After the success of 2022’s Harry & Meghan, Netflix has turned its attention to another royal couple for its latest documentary.
Titled “Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story,“ the upcoming project continues to explore the themes of racism and exile faced by Norway’s Princess Märtha Louise and her fiancé, self-proclaimed shaman Durek Verrett.
The couple has long faced scrutiny over their unconventional relationship. Durek, an American spiritual guide, conspiracy theorist, and convicted felon, has been a lightning rod for criticism since their romance went public in 2019. Now, the pair are telling their story on their own terms.
“It’s not easy being the first black man marrying into the European royal family,” Durek says in a new trailer released September 4, while Märtha admits, “because he’s a shaman, they say that he’s dangerous for the royal family and that I’m brainwashed… he’s maybe a scam artist.”
Directed by Tiger King’s Rebecca Chaiklin and produced by Emmy winner Chris Smith, the film follows the couple for over a year as they prepare for their wedding while navigating relentless media attention.
In a past interview, Märtha reflected on how the relationship opened her eyes to racism. “I never thought of myself as racist before I got together with Durek… it was such an eye-opener for me,” she told Business Insider in 2021.
Märtha is fourth in line to the Norwegian throne and relinquished her royal duties in 2022.
Rebel Royals will premiere on Netflix on September 16.
