Apple enthusiasts hoping for a next-generation AirPods Max upgrade will be deeply disappointed.

As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the developers of Apple are not working on developing the next generation of its premium audio product line. The company plans to prioritise other products for the time being.

The Gurman stated that resources are being utilized towards the upgradation of M5 Mac and iPad refreshers, iPhone 17, external display, and an updated HomePod.

This move highlights that the company prefers to focus more on its popular in-ear AirPods and supporting hardware in other devices, leaving the flagship headphones without a meaningful update in sight.

Apple announced the first generation of AirPods Max on December 8, 2020, when the company launched the headphones and made them available to order for customers.

The shipping of the AirPods Max started on December 15, 2020.

Later in 2024, Apple introduced various upgrades to the headphones, introducing a USB-C charging port and new colour options, although the core audio experience remained the same as the original 2020 model.

The AirPods Max gained significant popularity and even became a fashion statement. Thus, the news of no update on the AirPods Max leaves fans disappointed as it's been five years there has been no improvement in the sound quality of the product which makes it overshadowed by rivals in significant areas.

The key competitors, such as Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones and the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 are available in updated versions for improved sound quality and overall user experience.
