Sea of Galilee turns blood red, ignites apocalypse fears
Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure the lake remains safe
The biblical Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Tiberias or Kinneret, has turned vivid blood red, sparking fears of a biblical omen and leaving locals confused.
The largest freshwater lake in Israel is a site of profound religious and cultural significance.
A viral video on social media has set the internet ablaze with many netizens declaring it a sign of end times, however, scientists have another theory.
As per Israel’s environment ministry, the eerie transformation or the apocalyptic spectacle was caused by a bloom of green algae. The ministry declared water safe for swimming.
Authorities declared that water’s unsettling hue is because of the algae which turns red when a natural pigment builds up under intense sunlight, adding that the pigment is harmless.
Kinneret Research Laboratory conducted several tests on water from the lake and concluded that the algae don't pose any threat. It also said that the water poses no health risks and didn’t have any allergic reaction to those exposed to it.
The Sea of Galilee holds special spiritual significance for three major faiths of the world: Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure the lake remains safe for tourism and its vital role as a water source.
