OpenAI GPT-5 targets coders in challenge to Anthropic’s Claude

OpenAI introduced its highly anticipated artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, which marks it as a major leap forward in AI-powered coding.

This poses a direct challenge to its rival Anthropic which is a leading name in the generative AI business. Anthropic has developed Claude which is a next-generation AI assistant built by Anthropic and is widely considered as the top AI model for programming tasks.

GPT-5 will be offered in both free and paid versions of ChatGPT that will merge advanced reasoning capabilities with traditional large language model (LLM) functions.

This move will help to tackle complex tasks with improved efficiency and accuracy.

While sharing details about the new models, OpenAI emphasized its coding prowess highlighting endorsements from developers who appreciated the bug-fixing and collaborative strategies of this model.

Anthropic’s Claude has reportedly ruled the coding AI industry, generating approximately $5 billion in revenue per year.

On the contrary, OpenAI, with a $12 billion revenue rate, aims to reclaim dominance by positioning the newly introduced GPT-5 as a superior coding assistant.

CEO Sam Altman stated that the defining feature of GPT-5 is that it is a “software on demand.”

Despite the high hype, critics argue that GPT-5 falls short of being a revolutionary AI that can solve global challenges.

Max Tegmark, a machine learning researcher and author, warns that the introduction of GPT-5 can make job placement worse and contribute to misinformation.

As OpenAI advances GPT-5's coding capabilities, the battle for AI supremacy in developer tools heats up ultimately benefitting coders.
