Prince Harry recalls feeling 'embarrassed' to show Meghan Markle his humble former home.

Before settling into their luxurious $29 million mansion in Montecito, Prince Harry’s living situation was a far cry from the grandeur one might expect of a royal.

In his 2023 memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex opened up about the modest two-bedroom home he once lived in Nottingham Cottage, affectionately dubbed “Nott Cott.”

Tucked within the grounds of Kensington Palace, the quaint property became a pivotal backdrop to the early days of his relationship with Meghan Markle.

“I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent that was the best you could say for it,” he wrote.

Describing the interiors with a mix of humour and humility, Harry noted the “dolls’ house low” ceilings and recounted Meghan’s cheeky remark likening the place to a “frat house.”

The Duchess of Sussex may have been taken aback by Prince Harry’s bachelor décor particularly the beanbag chair that matched his brown sofa but the couple’s home style has come a long way since those early days at Nottingham Cottage.

After Meghan moved in, the pair upgraded their humble London hideaway with new lighting and even a second hand settee. But today, they live a world away from royal staff quarters and second hand sofas.

Since relocating to the U.S. in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have put down roots in Montecito, California, a serene enclave known for its sweeping ocean views and celebrity neighbors.

Their sprawling mansion, tucked behind a long private driveway and towering security gates, was purchased for $14.65 million.

Now, just a few years later, its value has reportedly soared to $29 million.

In an interview with The Cut, Meghan described falling in love with the home at first sight. “We did everything we could to get this house,” she said.

“Because you walk in and go… Joy. And exhale. And calm. It’s healing. You feel free.”
