King Charles and Queen Camilla were greeted by typical Scottish weather as they arrived in Kirkcaldy on day two of the annual Royal Week in Scotland.

On Wednesday, July 2, the King and Queen attended the town’s War Memorial’s 100th anniversary unveiling. Their Majesties unveiled a new commemorative cairn, which was designed as a symbolic time capsule and filled with contributions from the young locals.

It came a day after the royal couple hosted a grand Garden Party in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The royal visit was organised in honour of the 100-year anniversary of the original 1925 memorial. The memorial is credited largely to local businessman John Nairn, who made a generous donation in honour of his son Ian who died during World War I.

Sadly, John Nairn passed away just three years later in 1928.

Upon arrival, the King and Queen were greeted by British Legion Chair Bill Mason, who introduced them to the monument’s sculptor. They later joined a re-dedication service near the War Memorial, with King Charles laying a wreath in remembrance.

A local brass band played as the couple greeted members of the public who gathered for the occasion, despite the wet weather.

Following the centenary, Queen Camilla will return to Holyroodhouse Palace — the official residence of King Charles in Scotland - to host a reception for the Queen’s Nursing Institute of Scotland.
