Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter was forced to return a birthday gift after strict orders.

Princess Chalotte marked her 10th birthday last month, which the young royal had marked surrounded by her family including her brothers Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 7.

King Charles had marked the day with a special shout-out to his beloved granddaughter, sharing a sweet portrait of her smiling.

It is understood that Charlotte received a special treatment, including Kate’s tradition to make a homemade birthday cake that day. The young royal is also believed to be showered with presents – which she may not have had to return.

Charlotte had received a bejewelled toy with a price tag of £36,000 with a nod to her mother and late grandmother, Princess Diana, when she was born in 2015. However, the gift was returned due to strict royal protocols that do not allow royals to accept commercial and expensive gifts.

The company at the time released a statement in which they thanked the Prince and Princess of Wales for bringing attention to their brand once again following their engagement. Hence, they wanted to honour that in the gift.

They detailed that the custom-designed baby rattle was fit for Princess Charlotte.

“Baby gifts made from precious metals are a tradition dating back to the 18th century. Our luxury rattle, worth $45,000 (£36,000), is made from 18k white gold; lined with sapphires, rubies, and diamonds to produce the Union Jack flag,” they revealed. “Such a unique gift, unlike any they will receive from well wishes around the world, will surely be treasured.”

“When Kate and William were engaged with the iconic blue sapphire ring that once belonged to Princess Diana, our sapphire ring sales rocketed,” the retailer said.
