Netflix has announced a documentary about The King's Trust, and it will star Idris Elba
King Charles is making his Netflix debut years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle first started working with the streaming giant.
On Friday, June 20, Netflix announced a new documentary project starring the 77-year-old monarch and Idris Elba, which will spotlight the impact of The King’s Trust as it marks 50 years of supporting youth around the world.
The film begins shooting next week and is set to premiere in fall 2026.
The project sees Charles teaming up with Elba — a three-time BAFTA nominee, Golden Globe winner, and six-time Emmy winner — who received a life-changing grant from the Trust in his early years.
“At a time when I didn’t have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support… that helped me take those first steps,” Elba, 52, shared.
“This documentary is about shining a light on what’s possible… and why the work of The King’s Trust remains so important.”
Though the King won’t sit for a formal interview, he will appear in candid conversations throughout the film, which is being produced by Elba’s company, 22 Summers. Young people supported by the Trust will also help bring the documentary to life.
The announcement comes in stark contrast to the Sussexes’ declining Netflix success. While their 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan made headlines, follow-ups like Heart of Invictus and Live to Lead struggled to find an audience.
The Sussexes’ latest Netflix project was Meghan’s cooking show, With Love, Meghan.
