King Charles, who has increasingly been relying on the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, received a slew of tragic news on Thursday.
Duchess Sophie had often been dubbed as the monarch’s “secret weapon” as the royal family navigates through major challenges.
As the members of the senior members were set to reunite for the annual award ceremony of the King’s Foundation, Charles received news about the tragic shooting incident which occurred at a school in Graz, Austria.
Just hours after the King issued a statement, it was revealed that a London-bound flight crashed in Ahmedabad, India, which included 169 Indian nationals, 53 from the UK, seven Portuguese nationals, one Canadian, and a crew of 12.
As the royal family coped with the shock from the tragedy, the Palace relied on Duchess Sophie to persevere with his duties as a statement was released about her latest engagement.
“Earlier this week, The Duchess of Edinburgh visited Northamptonshire. During the visit,” the Palace stated.
“Her Royal Highness: Marked the 350th Anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton and the rebuilding of the Town. She also met children from a local school who had created artwork based on the fire,” it continued.
“Celebrated the 10th anniversary of Blackthorn Good Neighbours Nursery, a local nursery run by the charity Growing Together Northampton.
“Visited @NorthamptonBikePark, a mountain bike facility which helps to tackle inequalities in local communities by encouraging children and adults to become active.”
Sophie emerged as the starring royal since King Charles ascended to the throne in 2022. After the monarch was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and with Kate Middleton also retreating into privacy following her own cancer diagnosis, the Duchess of Edinburgh rose to the occasion.
She continues to play a crucial role in the monarchy and it is expected that she, along with Prince Edward, would also have a distinctive role in Prince William's reign when he is king.
