Buckingham Palace makes announcement as Camilla marks important milestone
Queen Camilla receives special honour in the presence of King Charles during their historic Canada visit
Queen Camilla is accompanying King Charles for his first tour to Canada following their ascension to the throne in 2022.
The King and Queen received a warm welcome as they arrived in Ottawa on Monday afternoon. After enjoying come cultural display at Lansdowne Park, the royal couple met with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Governor General Mary Simon and Indigenous leaders at Rideau Hall this afternoon.
Buckingham Palace then made a special announcement about Queen Camilla, as she marked an important milestone in her time as the Queen Consort.
“This afternoon, The Queen was sworn in as a member of the Canadian Privy Council,” the statement from the palace read.
“In the presence of The King, the Governor-General and the Prime Minister, The Queen participated in a private ceremony,” it continued. “The Privy Council is a group of people who advise The King on issues of importance to Canada.”
Despite several visits to Canada in the past, this particular visit holds key significance for Charles and the country.
The King will be opening the Parliament on Tuesday. The event will mark the third time a monarch delivers the throne speech in Canada. Charles's mother and predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II, read the speech in 1957 and 1977.
Moreover, the timing of the visit is important as diplomatic tensions have increased in the past few months after US President Trump made controversial remarks about making Canada the 51st state.
It is understood that Charles will be playing a crucial role to underscore Canadian sovereignty and alleviate the tensions between the two states.
